FREEDOM OF SPEECH ALERT

Our most fundamental freedom and right is the right to free speech.  It is articulated in the First Amendment to the US Constitution: 

Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

With few exceptions, all speech is protected, including hate speech:

The Supreme Court has identified categories of speech that are unprotected by the First Amendment and may be prohibited entirely. Among them are obscenity, child pornography, and speech that constitutes so-called “fighting words” or “true threats.”

Freedom of speech has a long history in America.  However, now, for the first time, we are experiencing demonstrations that seem to be targeting speech itself.  For example, this is true of recent demonstrations at Berkeley, University of California and at New York University.  They haven’t targeted specific issues, but more dangerously targeted speech itself.  At times, they have been violent all the while claiming freedom of speech for themselves and their actions.  This is wrong.  Freedom of speech does not include a right to assault people or damage property.

Democracy is a marketplace of ideas that relies on the influx of new ideas of all kinds.  When this stream of ideas lessons, democracy begins to die.  Freedom of speech is absolute.  It’s not a partial right.  Giving more of it to someone doesn’t lesson it for someone else.  Like voting, freedom of speech is the birthright of every American citizen, but like all rights, it comes with responsibilities.  For each of us to fully enjoy freedom of speech, it’s critical that we recognize this right for others no matter how they and their ideas are different from ours.  They can say what they want!  We all can!  If we support this right and defend this right for others, then our own is assured. 

ALL PUBLIC SERVANTS AND ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES who swore allegiance to the US Constitution, and to protect it, have a special duty to speak out when freedom of speech is infringed by anyone.  When this happens, and especially when some use violence to prevent speech, those actions are hypocritical, disgusting, and un-American.   

THE MEDIA has a special opportunity and obligation to speak out when the right to free speech is threatened.  Their historical responsibility as the “4th branch of government”  demands condemnation of any action or effort to block speech whether it is from the left, right, or the middle.  In recent times, the media hasn’t alway been unbiased and alert to the importance of fulfilling this role and their responsibility.

AS VOTERS, it is our job to monitor and ensure that the public servants, elected representatives, and the media do their job.  After all, effective voting relies on the right to free speech.  It is the ultimate free speech.  Political disagreements, and losses in elections,  do not impact or lesson our duty to protect this RIGHT.

OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT OBAMA

Dear President Obama,

I have heard and read reports of your efforts to reach out to leaders in Congress concerning the open seat on the US Supreme Court.  In spite of your efforts, it appears that Mr. McConnell and the Republican caucus in the Senate are still determined to wait until the next President takes office, and sends them a nomination.  Apparently, they feel that in choosing a new President, the American people will also be choosing the next nominee for the court.  I can imagine that this fills you with frustration, and yes, while I don’t agree with it, I can also see the map of thinking by a Republican Majority Leader.  It is not without logic, but I’m not sure it serves the country very well.  So, what do you do? 

U.S. Supreme Court

I have an idea about what you can do on this issue.  I believe my idea resonates with both your position as President, and your skills as a constitutional professor and a very capable public speaker.  Frankly, I believe it connects with your passions, and many of your core beliefs as I understand them.  So, what is my idea?

Leave the “fight” behind on filling the open US Supreme Court position, and take the high ground.  Begin a persistent conversation with the America people about the US Constitution, and the US Supreme Court.  In this campaign season, make this your campaign.  Become a professor to the nation on this issue, and these topics.  Calmly remind us of the steps required to fill the open seat, and where responsibility for each step lies.  Resist sarcasm and embrace sincerity.  Through history lessons, remind us what qualifications and attributes the greatest justices brought to the bench.  President Kennedy gave a speech with similar intent on the topic of peace at American University on June 10, 1963.  He was eloquent as I believe you can be.  

Rise above the partisanship and tug of war between the Democratic and Republican parties.  Ignore the special interests.  Focus on helping America find a new justice who will do their part in fair constitutional interpretation, and writing good law.  Then after all of this, you may find that the American people will tell both the Republicans and the Democrats in the Senate that they should consider a nomination by you.  Or, at least you will know that if you are unable to submit a nominee, you have prepared the ground by raising the bar of excellence so that the next President will have to meet a high standard with their nominee.  The American people will require it. 

I know these suggestions and my thoughts are unconventional, but all of us are longing for quiet steady leadership.  If you will give us this leadership, you will be as a  “father to the nation,” and be taking steps which will unite us.  You are clearly a loving husband to First Lady Michelle, and a dedicated father to Sasha and Milia.  So, I believe this role will feel comfortable to you.  By leading in this way, you will be laying the corner stones and building blocks of a great appointment, whoever makes it.  Spend the time with all of us in America to build our expectations for excellence.  Then it’s up to us.  I believe in America as you do, and I don’t think we’ll let you down.

President Obama, great Presidents are remembered for how they lead the country, not their party. Leaders don’t always do what is expected.  That’s why they are leaders.  Do the unexpected.

THE POWER OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE

Ted Cruz is right when he says, 

“The power of the American people, when we rise up and stand for liberty, knows no bounds.”

However, what he and the rest of the candidates, both Republican and Democratic, right and left, liberal and conservative, man and woman, black and white, don’t understand is that we’re looking for a leader who will bring us together.   We are looking for an honest public servant who will serve only one special interest, OURS.  We are looking for a leader who can look to the brights stars that light our future, and take us to them.  We haven’t seen the next President of the United States yet, but surely we will in time.

Now, we should become calm and thoughtful.  We should lesson the volume of our voices and prepare to increase the volume of our votes.  This time, every eligible voter must vote.

When we raise our voices through our votes, on the same day, we vote together as a country.  Counted one at a time, our voices sound very different.  We are a country of many different points of view.  However, through voting we harmonize with each other in the song we sing.   The more people who vote, the more harmonic the melody becomes, and we become the greatest acapella choir of all time.  Our best decisions in voting result from our diversity as a country, and when we exert the personal independence and liberty we all enjoy as Americans.  

Our decisions shine brightest when we have faith, in both our diversity and independence, and we follow our faith. The act of voting turns our heads to the future causing us to imagine new possibilities, and energizing us with the hope they bring.

Let us always remember that honesty and public service are the gears that drive our democracy, and we turn those gears with our RIGHT TO VOTE.   LET’S ALL VOTE!

CONSIDER THE DIFFERENCES (Politicians vs. Public Servants vs. Leaders)

Politician President

• This is the pinnacle of my career and power.
• I’m looking forward to the increased retirement and continuing benefits-perks.
• I will work to fulfill the interests of those who voted for me.  
• I will lead on the issues to implement my agenda and my party’s platform.
• I will interpret the rules so that my actions are legal
• I care about what is good for me, my party, and our viewpoint on the issues.

Public Servant President

• I will do my best to put self last and America first. 
• I will work hard to make a contribution, and then move on to give someone else the same opportunity.
• This isn’t my career, and I look forward to returning to mine in private life as a citizen.
• I am embarrassed by all the perks people want to give me.
• I never take credit, but find out who really deserves it, and I give it to them.
• I serve my constituents and will lead them toward consensus on the issues.

Leader President 

• I will lead America toward fulfillment of its potential and destiny.
• I lead all Americans whether they voted for me or not. 
• I lead toward a vision not a position on an issue.
• Leading is my service and my duty.
• The only special interest that matters is America’s.
• I will lead toward leaving America in better shape than she was in when I took office.

Practice Thinking: Duty Number ONE-SAFETY

“I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will, to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

When a newly elected President places his or her hand on the bible, and makes a sacred promise to protect the Constitution of the United States, that moves their duty to protect America to the front of the line and ahead of the many other things a President does in the job.

As voters, we have a responsibility too.  As we listen to the candidates, 1) we all hear what they say, 2) we consider the experience they bring, and  3) develop feelings about how we think they will perform in the job.  This is exactly what we’ve all experienced in seeking jobs for ourselves.  However, now we are doing the hiring.  We should be thoughtful and choose wisely.  The input into our thinking and feelings should be current or from history, but relevant.  In addition, the actions and results of a current President give input as we consider how we feel regarding America’s safety, and our personal safety.  This input shapes our expectations for the 2016 batch of candidates, and our expectations for their possible future performance, doesn’t it?

PRACTICE WITH CURRENCY

Well, so what!  OK, let’s take a real example and practice our thinking:  The current debate on gun control.  There are two very divided sides to this issue, and they are driven further apart by special interests and the politicians.  In any event, the President has chosen this issue as a point of focus, arguing with passion that it will bring increased safety to all of us in America.   The question for each of us as voters is, “WILL IT, REALLY?”  

To begin our “thinking practice,” lets look at this from two perspectives:  1) The big picture or national viewpoint, and 2) The local and more personal viewpoint.  Now ask.  Will compliance with the President’s executive orders make us more safe in fact as a nation, and should you choose to own a gun, make you personally feel more safe because you’ve followed the executive orders, or someone has?  Do you feel confident that others will comply as you might choose to do?  What about the bad guys?  What if they don’t comply?  These are tough questions, to which I’m not suggesting an answer.  I’m only asking you to ask the questions.  

I have faith in voter choices, and I have confidence that Americans will make the best decisions with their votes.  I really believe, and that belief forms the basis of the Voting Alert Beacons.  Do you have the same confidence in your choices, and in the choices of your fellow Americans?  I hope so.

PRACTICE WITH HISTORICAL RELEVANCY

Still practicing, and on the issue of safety, let’s think bigger and give thought to what history might teach us.  Expand your thinking to look back at the serving President’s performance record on national safety.  Consider the following events:

• Doubling the national deficit from $10 to $20 trillion (a key safety driver)
• Continuing cuts in defense spending
• Not putting the missile defense system in Eastern Europe
• Watching as Russia invaded Crimea (later annexed) and the Ukraine
• Not implementing by actions that contribute to energy independence
• Benghazi
• Releasing 6000 convicts from federal prisons
• Iran nuclear agreement
• Syrian refugees
• Continued growth of ISIS
• Not sealing the US borders
• Not taking action on the Syrian chemical weapon redline
• Early withdrawal of forces from Iraq
• Plans to withdraw forces from Afghanistan
• Releasing Guantanomo prisoners (with goal to close the prison)

The controversy around all and each of these continues to swirl.  We all have our own ideas and opinions about them, but let’s go back to my earlier question.  In terms of keeping America SAFE, do you think the serving President has properly balanced actions and responses in each, given how all of these connect to  each other to form a tapestry?  Is that tapestry a warm blanket of safety?  Is America safer?  Is there a unifying vision that runs through all of them?  Finally, finish the process by going back to the beginning, and ask yourself how you feel about gun control now.  Should it even be part of the same historical “tapestry and weave?”  Ask yourself how safe you might feel now if different actions had been taken along the way. 

OK, now carry the learnings and feelings you’ve gotten from this thought experiment, and look at the 2016 candidates.  Consider your choice carefully and be sure to vote!!!

LEADERS HAVE VISION!

On their websites, in their speeches, in what they have written, in interviews, in their public and private performance records, and according to what they have said, or probably will talk about, at debates, the current crop of Presidential candidates have included the following as priorities for our country:  

Jobs, education, national and personal security, improved standard of living, increasing the GDP, military capacity and national defense, strong diplomacy, immigration, tax reform, environmental protection and preservation, and reform of government to increase efficiency and effectiveness.  I may have missed a few, but this is a long list of the most important things.

Here’s a question, without regard to any political position on the issues, but only focused on generally finding improvement for our country in these areas …

WHY HAVEN’T ANY OF THE CANDIDATES PROPOSED THAT WE SEND A CREW TO MARS AND RETURN THEM SAFELY?

It is an act of leadership to see the challenges now and ahead, and propose a vision that takes us safely and confidently forward.  It is an act of leadership to call upon us as a nation to focus on doing something really difficult.  It is an act of leadership to stand up and with a strong character say, “follow me.”

Such a goal would not only cause America to focus on the trail forward, but we would reclaim our leadership position in the world.  I am quite sure that Russian, Iran, ISIS, and the rest of the evil actors would take notice.

The nay-sayers will hide behind the cost of such a mission.  I don’t know if it would take another $10 billion or $100 billion or even $500 billion.  I do know that any of those costs are small compared to the tangible and intangible returns from such a mission.  I do know that any of those costs are small compared to the amount our national debt has increased since 2000.  Finally, I do know that based on books and research easily available, that the “moon landing” in 1969, and what it took to accomplish that, is almost fully responsible for the America we live in today.

Let’s learn from history!   LISTEN TO WHAT ONE OF OUR GREATEST PRESIDENTS SAID WHEN HE SET THE GOAL OF GOING TO THE MOON:

WE THE PEOPLE need to ask the candidates for their Mars vision!  Remember Beacon #3 (Listen/Ignore).  It is fair for us to ask many questions and expect them to respond so we can "listen."

Honesty and public service are the gears that drive our democracy, and we turn those gears with our RIGHT TO VOTE.   LET’S ALL VOTE!

Potential-Possibility-Getting Stronger

Beacon #3 states we should listen to what candidates and public servants say about their plans, and their vision for how they will lead.  As VOTERS, this helps us judge the person on their plans and their capacity to lead and inspire.  The current gridlock in our government is at least in part caused by the polar positions on the various issues.  So, one issue at a time, the disagreement deepens.  No one is talking about a vision for the country that puts all the issues and challenges on the table at the same time.

Sometimes when you look at the big picture it’s possible to see opportunities in place of only challenges and problems.  Much like a puzzle, how you put the pieces together is critical to allowing the picture to emerge.  Keep in mind, that most pictures that emerge are quite nice and often inspiring.  Below, I’ve listed a number of big issues of the day.  In my list, I’ve created two categories (along with initial comments) as the first step in helping us look at them differently.  As we move these around, our minds eye begins to see different blending, and the opportunities and energies begin to rise to the surface.  I’ll continue to add detail to this beginning vision and share it in future posts.  Let’s see if any of the candidates this fall are leaders enough to do the same thing.

Potential / Possibility [Unleashing the energy and genius of free men and women ]

• Create a “global best in class” education system by taking state and local actions using global best practices
• Rebuilding our transportation system including roads, bridges and mass transit
• Send a group of men and women to Mars and return them safely to earth by 2024
• Build a 22nd century military capability
• Increase personal liberty by decreasing government size and regulation
• Overhaul our tax system
• Increase legal immigration and stop illegal immigration

Getting Stronger [Taking care of us]

• Turn the Veteran Administration (VA) into a global class health system by inviting in private practices and participation
• Reinforce Social Security and Medicare for the long term 
• Change welfare programs into personal growth programs 
• Adjust the Affordable Care Act (ACA) so that it can achieve the same global class health system status as the VA by re-inserting private practices and participation
• Turn clean environment challenges into growth opportunities with long turn and transitory planning
• Pay off the national debt
• Lead the world with our human values and commitment to freedom and liberty through what we say and the actions we take, remaining always aware that leadership has an action orientation

COMMENT AND QUESTION: The Search for Truth

In a Voting Alert Beacons post on May 17, 2014, I discussed the virtues of truth and honesty.   Following is a portion of what I wrote:  

“Truth can be found in the alignment of our senses with ideas and viewpoints that are supported by facts.  To pursue the truth we need to use our intellect, our spirit and all of our powers of intention.   It has always been a quest, and still is.

Outside of a way of living, talking about something, or in taking an action, honesty doesn’t mean much.  However, it is everything when our lives, the words we speak, and the actions we take line up perfectly with the truth.  The truth, not from only our point of view, but from point of view of others, too.  Our honesty isn’t so much about ourselves as it is about how we treat others, the actions we take, and what we give of ourselves to the world around us.”

It is perhaps the most important goal for us as citizens that the public servants we elect are truthful and honest.  This is not only true for how we work together as Americans, but it is equally true for how we treat the world around us, especially our closest friends and allies.  An example the world is currently experiencing is the conflict between Israel and Hamas (it’s not between Israel and the Palestinian people).

Two days ago, I posted another “Comment and Question” about Hamas and the lack of support President Obama, Secretary Kerry and the administration are showing Israel.  I also included comment about Britain, Germany and France, and how weak they are at this point in history as evil seems to be emerging everywhere.  Lastly, I questioned the Media in terms of factual and unbiased reporting.  The Media as a group generally claims that they are presenting all the facts and reporting with no bias.  Well, maybe not.  

Somehow the truth seems to emerge eventually though. Today, I found several videoclips (Facebook and Twitter) that are factual, truthful and simple.  See what you think.

Questions

President Obama, have you done your homework?  Did you view the above videoclips?  Has this kind of information been presented to you in your intelligence briefings?  If you haven’t seen this kind of information before, as President, have you fixed the problem for the future?

Secretary Kerry, why did you even think it was a good idea to negotiate with Hamas?  You realize that they are on our American (and most other countries) terrorist organization list, right?  Do you understand that the strongest negotiating position is always from truth and honesty?  

Media, I asked in my post two days ago why no one seemed to be able to find information about what Hamas is doing on the ground.  Others, not in the media, seem to find information.  Why haven’t you?  Why do you interview Hamas leaders and members?  Why do you give a listed terrorist organization a “microphone?”  Do you realize that if you were a company doing business with Hamas, it would be illegal?  I’m not at all in favor of limited the Media and curtailing the First Amendment, but can’t you just present all the sides with more truth and honesty?

BOTTOM LINE:

Now and in the future, when we cast our votes and elect public servants, let’s work harder at finding people who will serve with truth and honesty.  If it’s the President, lets elect someone who will lead from the “high ground.”  If it’s Congress, let’s elect people who begin with truth and honesty as they find common ground to work together from, and solve problems.

COMMENT AND QUESTIONS: When will the world be “appalled” by Hamas?

Neville Chamberlain was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (Britain) from 1937 until 1940.  During these three years, in concert with France, Adolf Hitler and Germany were given the Czech region of Sudetenland with the hopes that it would appease Germany.  This hope was never realized and by the end of 1939 Hitler had taken the rest of the Czech regions and Poland.  Britain and Chamberlain declared war, but it was too late.  The march of Germany across Europe had begun resulting the virtual destruction of Europe, the death of tens of millions of civilians, and the killing of over six million Jews by the Third Reich in the Holocaust.  

Now, in the Middle East, Hamas (the proxy of Iran) has attacked Israel once again. Hamas is recognized as a terrorist organization by all of the civilized world.  Hamas has been killing innocent civilians since their inception in 1987.  

Questions

• President Obama, how would you lead and what would America’s response be if 240 million American citizens were threatened and/or injured by rockets fired by a terrorist organization in a neighboring country?  What if those same terrorists had constructed a complex tunnel system which allowed them to infiltrate into our largest cities closest to our borders?  How is it possible that your administration can say that America is “appalled” by the defensive actions Israel is taking, all the while doing its best to minimize civilian casualties?  Especially, when there is clear evidence that Hamas is directly responsible for these civilian deaths.

• Chancellor Merkel, given that Germany (your country) is the country which tried to conquer Europe in WWII and killed over six million Jews in the Holocaust, why haven’t you used all of your powers of oratory, both inside Germany and directed to the rest of the world, in defense of Israel’s right to exist and live in peace?  Don’t you feel any responsibility to speak the truth about Hamas?  As leader of a now free and moral Germany, don’t you feel any responsibility to lead toward the moral high ground?

• Prime Minister Cameron, during WWII England suffered tremendously and was in a real fight for its’ existence like the Israel of today.  When you bombed Germany because you existence was threatened, were you as careful about doing everything you could do to protect the civilian population as Israel has been?  Why haven’t you risen up with clear oratory, as Chancellor Merkel needs to do, and declared the rightness of what Israel is doing in defending itself?

• All media, why do you only publish the pictures of Palestinian suffering?  You are all such great investigative reporters and organizations, would now be a great time to put those skills to use?  Can’t you dig a little deeper to find pictures and video clips of Hamas forcing its civilians to stay in harms way?  In this day of modern communications, can’t you find evidence of how Hamas is using schools, hospitals, mosques, and other public places to store weapons and conduct war from?

Remember, when we step into the voting booth in November, lets vote for people who are clear on the difference between right and wrong!!  

Using the Voting Alert Beacons, we all need to step forward to do our duty and then demand that the public servants we elect, do theirs!!

TO LEAD A NATION

In his course, TO LEAD A NATION, The Presidency in the Twentieth Century, Robert Dallek discusses the reasons why some of the Presidents of the Twentieth Century (Theodore Roosevelt through Ronald Reagan) rose to greatness, while most of us can’t remember who the others were. 

Mr. Dallek identifies several things that the “great Presidents” consistently score high in.  This list of items includes:  Vision, charisma, pragmatism, consensus building, trust or credibility, and luck.

These are personal attributes that we as voters can use to identify who we might vote for, right?  They are key characteristics we can identify for ourselves by listening to what the candidates say and by knowing a little about their track records.  By the way, aren’t these attributes of “Presidential greatness” also qualities we’d like to see more of in all of our public servants and representatives?

The 2014 elections are around the corner, and the 2016 elections not to long after that.  Maybe we should start asking ourselves how the current crop of public servants and representatives “measure up” using this list. 

NOTE:  This list of presidents examined by Mr. Dallek included:  Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kenney, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and Ronald Reagan.

After Ronald Reagan, the Presidents have been George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barak Obama

A Vision – One Goal – One Speech

In several weeks, on September 12th, we will mark the 50 year anniversary of the Rice University speech in which President John F. Kennedy gave America the vision and goal of sending a person to the moon, and returning them safely, before the end of the decade.  

As a result, Neil Armstrong stepped onto the surface of the moon on July 20, 1969 at 9:56pm EDT and President Kennedy’s vision for America was fulfilled.  Less talked about, and certainly nowhere near as dramatic in the moment as that “first step,” are the civilization changing effects the moon effort put into motion.  Not only did the moon landing remind us of the unlimited nature of humankind, but everything that was discovered and produced in the process is responsible for many of the things we use and enjoy in our lives today.

Here’s a partial list of areas and items:  Environmental research and monitoring, Weather predicting, Monitoring vegetation, Aerospace engineering, Electronics, Telecommunications, Education in math and the physical sciences, Micro technology, Health and medicine, Light emitting diodes to ease pain and speed healing, Improved ear thermometers, Ventricular assist devices, Artificial limbs, Transportation, Aircraft anti-icing systems, Highway safety grooving, Improved radial tires, Corrosion detection on aircraft, Public safety, Video enhancing and analysis systems, Fire resistant materials, Firefighting equipment, Consumer items, Stay dry clothing, No fog goggles, Home recreation, Temper foam for beds and crash protection, Enriched baby food, Portable cordless vacuums, Freeze dried food, Environment and Agriculture, Water purification, Solar energy, Pollution remediation, Computers and computer technology, structural analysis software, Remotely controlled ovens, Powdered lubricants, Improved mine safety, Food safety, Food sterilization, Food packaging.

Our world is what it is today because of the speech by President Kennedy.  He was one man with a vision, a goal, and the drive to lead.  At that time, as today, America faced many challenges.  Perhaps, if we could remember some history, there would be lessons we could adapt and some old ideas we could make new.

Maybe we should notice that in this political season, with the extra turmoil and turbulence we seem to be experiencing this time in the election for President, two important things will have happened before the election in November.  On August 5, Curiosity landed safely on Mars and has begun its exploration, and on September 12th, we will celebrate the 50 year anniversary of President Kennedy’s speech.  

Candidates Obama and Romney, let’s go to Mars.  Find a vision, set a goal and let’s get moving again.  Then in the process, we’ll invent things we can’t even imagine yet, we’ll learn things we didn’t know were there to be learned, we’ll create an education system open to all of humankind, we’ll cure diseases we don’t even know exist yet, we may eliminate hunger, and we might create more jobs then there are people on the planet.

What are you waiting for?

The Olympics are thrilling!

It’s spectacular to watch athletes pursuing their dreams and pursuing excellence.  Not only do we have the privilege of watching the best of humanity stretching their minds, their bodies and their spirits to reach their own “personal mountain tops,” but we get a glimpse of the unlimited nature of our species.

If only the “race for President” would be made of the same stuff.  A race that calls forth the best in the candidates not the worst, and one that puts the same unlimited nature on display, not more of the same steps backward that history has too many of.

On Facebook this morning a good friend wrote this post:  “If only we could be as excited about the presidential election as we are about the Olympics.”

Indeed!  I typed the following response:  “With the Olympics, we know each of the athletes is pursuing approximately a 15-20 year vision or dream.  If either of the candidates for President would give us a 20 year vision or dream for America, I'll bet the election process would not only be more interesting, but it might be productively good for America.  Now it's like watching two kids fighting on the playground.  They either need to shape up or we should kick them out of school.”

Mr. Obama and Mr. Romney, it’s time that each of you share your long term vision for America!  We want to know what vision you will lead from if elected President of America.

GOOD GRIEF, YOU HAVE A VISION, DON’T YOU?

We argue too much about where we are, and whose fault it is.  We need to first decide where we wish to go, and then create a vision or plan for how to get there.

President Obama and Mr. Romney, what are your visions of success for America 25 years from now?  Instead of your positions on the issues, please tell us what your visions are.  Do you have visions of success?  

Ok, let me begin with the Voting Alert Beacons vision as an example.  

“By the Presidential election of 2016, and continuing thereafter, reach a 95% voter turnout thereby realizing the genius of our combined American intelligence, and giving rise to a new higher standard of civil service and servant leadership.  Without negative campaigning, and the influence of money and polls, elections will become events of national renewal.  Let us strike the bell beginning a new period of enlightenment in the American democracy that will ring for millennia to come.  We can renew and fulfill the original American Dream, the right to vote, for all her citizens, and once again let America shine as a beacon for the world.”

The day after the 2016 election, the media will report the following:

• 95% of eligible voters cast ballots
• All candidates for President created visions and offered them to America
• For the first time in American memory, the new President leads with a vision of success that looks 25 years into the future
• The new President was elected by 75% of the votes cast giving their vision a mandate

How do the individual Voting Alert Beacons support the vision so that the story told above can be realized?  All of the Beacons are tied to each other.  Think of them as a sport team where each team member plays an important part.  All the Beacons play critical parts in reaching the vision of success that will be reported by the media the day after the 2016 election.  

Nothing changes until we do something and take action.  Our most important action is to always vote (Beacon #6).  Always voting is the most important responsibility a citizen has in a democracy (Beacon #2).  It is a personal right and responsibility (Beacons #1 and #2).  The genius of America’s collective energy emerges when we cast our votes in secret (Beacon #7).  Our votes are further strengthened when we don’t express our opinions through polls.  Our opinions should be focused and only offered through our votes (Beacon #4).  We can also use our votes to minimize special interest influence and corruption by voting only for candidates that accept contributions from individual voters in relatively small amounts (Beacon #5).  In the end, our most important right is strengthened and preserved when we use it effectively (Beacon #1).

Today I checked several of the news websites to see what issues and important things are being reported on in the Presidential election campaign.


Here’s the list::

• Proposed “Buffett Rule” for taxing the wealthy
• Various tax code changes
• Possibly eliminating the Department of Education and Department of Housing and Urban Development
• The move into high gear of campaign fundraising
• The fight over the female vote
• Searching for a Vice-President candidate by both parties
• The harsh attacks that Mr. Romney and President Obama are already trading
• The Romney dog Seamus riding on the car rooftop 

This list contains items that range from important to childlike to ridiculous.  

Nonetheless, it is still an important list because of what it doesn’t contain.  We have no idea what the “vision(s)” are of which the items are a part and should support.  Each item should fit into a “Vision of Success” for America, or it shouldn’t be a topic of discussion.  Without the vision or big picture, it is impossible to know how to feel about any of the issues, and then which candidate to vote for.

Ok, what is a “vision of success” and why do we need it?

Let’s start with an example.  One of the most often cited and thought about visions is President John Kennedy’s vision and challenge to America that it would land a person on the moon and return them safely by the end of the decade.

Here’s his language.

“We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy - but because they are hard! Because that challenge is one we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone and one we intend to win!”  …  John F. Kennedy - Rice University speech on September 12, 1962

So, that’s an example of a vision of success.  It reached for a high achievement and inspired a nation.  As a result, the vision was fulfilled and America landed a man on the moon in 1969.  How did that happen?

In concept, it is fairly simple.  The vision transformed America by providing a picture of what could be.  It was a catalyst that focused the attention of everyone on the goal of landing on the moon.  With that focus it also brought alignment across many organizations and individuals.  With the alignment great amounts of energy was unleashed toward attainment of the goal.  Everyone “pulled the rope” the same direction.  The historical ability of America to rise to meet great challenges was called upon.  In the end, all of the elements were united by the clear and compelling vision of the moon land.  A vision which has played over countless times in the image of Neil Armstrong descending the ladder and first stepping on the surface.

Call to Candidates

We want to know what your vision of success is for America and why you think it’s the right vision.  We aren’t interested in your view of the other candidate’s vision.  That’s our job.  Please put all of your energy into developing your vision of success and then tell us what it is.  

Voting Alert Beacons Vision

I’ll go first.  In my next post, I’ll offer a vision of success for the Voting Alert Beacons.

3. Let’s talk about leadership in terms of vision, passion, and values. 
4.  I will also offer a job description for the Presidency of the United States so that we have at least a basic standard for knowing if a candidate is qualified, along with their strong points and weak points.

Throughout, I hope to do my best to get the candidates to talk to us as voters instead of arguing with each other.  It is my hope that the candidates will respond and focus less on defeating each other, and more on giving us reasons to vote for them.

Will someone with a VISION OF SUCCESS for America please run for President!

Last week after the Tuesday Republican primaries in Maryland, Wisconsin and Washington DC, the press, the commentators, and President Obama started to focus on Mitt Romney as the presumptive Republican candidate for President.  Some deference is still being paid to Ron Paul, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich, but there has definitely been a shift in the “wind.”  Yesterday (Sunday), Newt Gingrich on FoxNEWS Sunday admitted that Mitt Romney is the likely Republican candidate.

It seems the “race” is on!  Last week as Mitt Romney and President Obama began to test the feel of a two man race, you would think that each would seize the moment to talk about why he is the best servant leader for these times in America.  Each could tell us what their vision of success is, and where it will take us as a country.

Sadly, but not unexpectedly, both Mitt Romney and President Obama are spending much of their time discussing why the other candidate shouldn’t be President.  It would be better for America, and more helpful to each of their campaigns, if they would focus on what he offering as a vision of success.   For now, remember to apply Voting Alert Beacon #3 as the candidates campaign.

Let’s see if we voters can get them to do that.  In my next post I will offer some thoughts on what a “vision of success” is.
